Healthy Snacking: Spicy Kick Popcorn

Snacking does not HAVE to involve eating food that leaves you with an oily texture in your mouth, a surge of energy followed by a sharp "crash", or loosening of your belt.  You CAN find healthy alternatives to your favorite JUNK foods:

First, determine what type of taste you're craving:  salty, spicy, savory or sweet
Next, consider texture:  crispy and crunchy, or soft and creamy
...and temperature:  frozen, cold, room-temp or warm
Finally, create a go-to list of healthy REAL foods that fit the criteria.

When I'm craving salty and savory foods for a snack, more and more I've been turning to organic popcorn NOT in a microwaveable bag (the chemicals in the bag lining are horrible!).  Making popcorn on the stovetop is quick and easy, plus, it's a good source of fiber.

The next time you're tempted to reach for some spicy corn chips, consider giving this recipe from one of my clients, Anissa (a super-inspiring creative at-home chef) a try.  You can make a batch in advance and then portion out in baggies to take to work.

Spicy Kick Popcorn

4 Tablespoons canola oil
1/2 cup popcorn kernels
1 Tablespoon cumin
1 Tablespoon chili powder
1 Tablespoon garlic powder
1 teaspoon kosher salt
1 teaspoon cayenne pepper

Pop kernels on stovetop or in popcorn popper.  Combine seasoning before sprinkling for even distribution.  Enjoy!
