This month, in honor of the holiday that marks the beginning of a season of over-eating, stress and sickness, I am focusing on fun, healthy snacks and treats for kids. Why do we launch our kids into “cold & flu season” with a system full of sugar, chemicals and unhealthy fats? These seasonal calorie-dense, nutritionally-poor foods weaken immune systems, cause major swings in blood sugar levels and contribute to the obesity epidemic that is claiming victims as young as 5-years-old. While these foods seem innocent and fun, their effects can be deadly. Why not try a different approach this year?
Banana “Hot Dogs”
These are great for a kid’s birthday or Halloween party! I got this recipe (and great photos – www.lillianbphotography.com) from my sister, Lillian, who served these at her daughter’s 5th birthday party. They were a huge hit with all of the kids!
Ingredients:
Bananas, peeled and sliced length-wise
Whole Grain Hot Dog Buns
Almond or Peanut Butter
Choice of Garnishments:
Raisins
Dried Apricots, diced
Dried Cherries
Dried Blueberries
All Natural, Sugar-free Preserves
Chopped Walnuts
Shredded Coconut
Shredded Carrots
Directions:
Spread nut butter on one side of bun.
Place one banana slice on bun and garnish with desired toppings.
Kids might enjoy preparing their own “hot dog”, with toppings placed in separate bowls, buffet-style
For younger kids, cut finished “hot dogs” in half, creating two shorter ones.
